What goes into a block wall that lasts in Las Cruces?

A concrete block wall is a masonry fence or garden wall, and here in Las Cruces, NM, we build them to give your yard privacy, security, shade, a break from the wind and less street noise.

A block fence takes the weather on both sides, so the materials, the design and the care in the work decide how long it lasts, and those are what you should compare between bids along with the price. Your price mostly comes down to the wall's length and height, how big the footing has to be, how much steel and grout go in, whether an old fence comes out first and how easy the spot is to reach. The schedule turns on our crew's calendar and on giving the footing and grout time to set before the next step goes on top. If the wall will hold back soil on a slope, that's a retaining wall, which is built differently. Either way, I'll give you your own figure in a written estimate once I've seen the spot.

How we build a concrete block wall

We start by marking the line and looking at the ground where the wall will sit, then dig and pour the footing with steel dowels, short bars that stand up out of the concrete and run into the bottom of the wall to tie the two together. From there our crew lays the block with steel in the courses, grouts the cores that hold the steel, caps the top and cleans up. Because a block wall stands on its footing, my bid writes out that footing and the steel, and it tells you how we plan to keep cracking in check and why, so you can hold it up against anyone else's.

Some walls are part of a bigger job. If the block is going under a house, a garage or an addition instead of around a yard, that's foundation block wall installation, where the footing carries a building's weight. If you'd like a grill counter or a bar along the new wall, we can build the outdoor kitchen masonry while the crew and the block are already on site.

Building concrete block walls on Las Cruces ground

A statewide soil report finds that most of New Mexico has a low but real chance of collapsible soil, dry ground that can drop when it gets wet, and it advises checking a building site for that before work starts. That's statewide guidance, not a rule for your lot, but since the footing is what keeps a wall in place, we look hard at the ground before we settle on a footing and tell you plainly if a soil test is worth paying for. We see the same kind of ground on jobs in Chaparral and Anthony, and we work across the cities around Las Cruces on both sides of the state line.

In New Mexico, anyone who builds or offers to build a wall like this for pay needs a license from the state's Construction Industries Division, which has an office here in Las Cruces. The state licenses a company through its Qualifying Party, a person it certifies for the kind of work the company offers, so it's fair to ask any contractor who that is for them, and we're glad to answer it.

  1. Call or send a request

Call (575) 222-9031 or use the form and tell us where the wall will go and about how long it'll run. We get back to you and set a time for me to come out.

  2. I look at the spot

I come out myself, walk the line, look at the ground and the slope and work out what the wall needs underneath. You get a written estimate that spells out the footing, the steel, the crack plan and the price, so you can compare it fairly.

  3. We handle permits and build

If the job needs a permit, we find out which office handles your address, take care of the application and set up the inspections. Then our crew builds the wall, letting each layer set before the next one goes on it.

  4. Walk the finished wall together

Once the last block is capped and the site is cleaned up, I walk the wall with you. Ask me anything about it then, while we're standing right next to it.

Questions about concrete block walls in Las Cruces

How much does a concrete block wall cost in Las Cruces?

Across the US, a concrete block wall with about 220 square feet of finished area usually costs about $2,100 to $2,800 for the job, before sales tax, any fees and dump charges. That's a national example, not our price, and a taller, longer or more heavily reinforced wall will land somewhere else. I'll give you your own figure in writing after I see the spot.

What keeps a block wall from tipping over?

On a wall that stands on its own, the footing does, because it holds the wall in position and resists both overturning and sliding. Steel dowels usually come up out of the footing into the wall to anchor it, which is why a good bid describes the footing and not just the block.

Why is there white residue on my block wall?

That white film is usually efflorescence, a deposit of salts left on the surface, and it's a looks problem that won't hurt the wall's strength. Heavy white streaks just under the mortar joints mean water got in, or is still getting in, higher up the wall, and if the deposits keep coming back, something needs fixing. Call us and we'll find where the water is coming from.

How do I check a contractor's license in New Mexico?

You can look up whether a contractor holds a valid license on the state's contractor license search before you sign anything. Look up the company named on your bid and make sure the license shows as valid.

What is the best way to fill a block wall, partial or solid grout?

It comes down to how closely the vertical steel is spaced. Partial grouting fills only the cores holding steel and solid grouting fills every core, and when the vertical bars are close together, solid grouting may be faster and cost less. I'll tell you which one your wall needs and why in the estimate.

What causes cracks in a new concrete block wall?

A lot of cracking in new block comes from shrinkage as the wall dries, so the fix is planning for it before the first course goes down. Trade guidance recommends horizontal steel and control joints, planned breaks where the wall can move without cracking across its face, laid out the way builders here usually do it, and with enough horizontal steel the joints may not be needed. Ask any contractor which approach they plan, and I'll tell you mine in the bid.

  • Foundation block wall installation

When block has to carry a house, garage or addition, the footing and steel are sized for that weight, and we build those foundation walls too.

  • Outdoor kitchen masonry

Planning a grill station or bar near your new wall? We build counters and kitchens in block and stone that match the wall and sit on solid bases.
